This Fall we have explored a few options in regards to doing a “Playground Makeover”. Our current playground equipment is not designed to necessarily be child friendly for younger children. Our swings are obsolete and have been identified as a safety issue with our insurance. The base of our playground has been sand, which is noncompliant to our insurance requirements as well. We have been working with PlayWorld to come up with a design that is not only kid-friendly, but we will also be creating a separate section for our preschool friends that will consist of appropriate equipment, along with replacing the base with a treated mulch. We believe that by creating an environment where children can experience unstructured play, is not only supporting their physical health but also increasing their chances to succeed in the classroom. Kids pay more attention to academic tasks when they are given frequent, brief opportunities for free play. Recess can also have a calming effect helping with disciplinary issues and impulse control. Unstructured physical activity on the playground helps kids become smarter, healthier and stronger. Below is our most recent design. The fenced area will be the preschool age area.
